In the midst of the Civil War, President Lincoln thought it necessary to stop and remember the blessings God had bestowed upon the nation. His Thanksgiving proclamation is a wonderful example of his leadership, and gives us a sense of perspective on both the time in which he lead and the present.

Melanie Kirkpatrick’s book starts from the beginning and then highlights the value the Thanksgiving holiday has added to America. She’s a brilliant writer, thinker, and historian.

William Bradford was the governor of Plymouth during the first days and what has become known as the first Thanksgiving feast. Samuel Eliot Morison’s edition gives readers a glimpse into those early days from a firsthand source.
